This tutorial will show you how to create background paper with aged or “tea-stained” edges using Paint Shop Pro X.
1. Begin by opening your background paper and creating a duplicate of it (Shift+D). Close the original.
2. Create a new Raster Layer (Layers > New Raster Layer > OK).
3. Click on the Paint Brush tool (B) and choose a brush that has a soft edge. For this example, I used a brush called Camel Hair. The size of the brush will depend on the size of your paper and the look you want to achieve. Set the Step to 5, the Density to 100, Rotation to 0 and Opacity to 50.
4. Next, choose a dark brown color for your foreground color. For this example, I’ve used #442f24.
5. Begin randomly painting around the edges of your background paper with the opacity set to 50. You can try different brush sizes for a random look. At this opacity setting, you can paint your paper further in from the edge.
6. Create a second new Raster Layer. Increase the opacity level to 70 and begin randomly painting on the new Raster Layer. This time, try painting a little closer to the edge.
7. Repeat the last step except increase the opacity level of the brush to 90 or 100. This time, the painting should occur at the very edges of the paper.
8. Once you are satisfied with the amount of staining, flatten the image (Layers > Merge > Merge All).
9. Add texture to your background paper by adding noise (Adjust > Add/Remove Noise > Add Noise). Choose Gaussian and 10% noise; be sure Monochrome is checked. Click OK.
10. You should now have background paper with tea-stained edges! Be sure to experiment with different brush tips, colors and opacity.
