Photo slicing can be created several ways in Photoshop, this tutorial will show you how to create the look using layers and layer masks.
To start, the photo has been placed, taking about one-third to half the page, before slicing it.
When using this treatment on a face, it’s best to treat each facial feature as a separate strip, for instance: eyes, nose, mouth.
Using the marquee selection, drag a rectanglar selection around the eyes.
In the layers palette, have the Image layer selected and apply a layer mask, using the add layer mask icon at the bottom of the menu.
The Image layer will now just show the eyes.
At this point, adding the stroke and drop shadow will help the placement of the other image strips. Double clicking on the Image layer brings up the Layer Style dialogue. Add the drop shadow to your preferences. The stroke added in the tutorial is 20 pixels white, added to the inside for sharp corners.
The eyes now have the stroke and shadow added to them.
Now is a good time to save, we are going to duplicate the image layer and start moving things around.
In the layers palette, select the image layer and enter Ctrl + J (Cmd + J Mac) Five times. I’ve renamed the eyes layer, all the other layer masks will be moved to complete the slicing design. One layer is above the eyes layer, this will be the top of the head.
Enter D to turn background/foreground colors to black and white, then X to switch.
Select the layer below the eyes. Turn the link off between the image and layer mask, this will keep the photo in the correct spot, we only want to move the mask.
Still on the same layer, select the layer mask, using the move tool in tool palette, click on the eyes in workspace and drag down to where the nose is located. The second shape should appear, now two photo slices. If you’d like to rotate it, enter Ctrl T (Cmd T Mac) for the transform tool, at the corners rotate the image as desired.
Unlink the other layers and place them as desired.
When finished with placement of photo slices re-link the images and the layer masks.
I’ve included a sample of photo slices without white border, to show another option.
