This tutorial demonstrates how to make it appear as if a paperclip joins paper or elements together on a layout.

Have the appropriate items open on the canvas. You can use a paperclip from your stash or use Effects> Paintbrush> Stamps and stamp one on your page.

Position the paperclip as required.

Zoom in.
With the paperclip selected, choose Effects> Transparency > Transparency Brush (ALT+SHFT+T) and select an appropriate brush size, with a hard edge and a transparency of between about 90 and 97% depending upon the color paper. This leaves a faint mark that gives the impression of the pressure from the paper resting on the paperclip – remember you will be adding a shadow to the paperclip that will darken this erased area, so be subtle.

Add shadows to finish.
