This tutorial will show you how to use the selection tool to create a feathered selection using Paint Shop Pro X.

1. Begin by opening your photo and creating a duplicate of your photo (keyboard shortcut: Shift+D). Close your original photo. Promote the Background Layer to a Raster Layer by right-clicking on the background layer on the layer palette and clicking Promote Background Layer.

2. Activate your Selection Tool (keyboard shortcut: S). Be sure you have enabled the Selection Tool and not the Freehand Selection Tool or the Magic Wand.
3. Choose the selection type you wish to create. For this example I’ve used the square style. Enter the amount of feathering you wish to create. The larger the value, the more feathering around the edges there will be.

4. Select the area of your photo you wish to crop. If you need to move your selection, right-click and drag it to the correct position.

5. Crop the image to the selection (keyboard shortcut: Shift+R). You should now have the cropped photo with feathered edges and a transparent background.

6. You can now add this feathered vignette-style photo to a montage layout, or add a solid color background to showcase it.

7. Be sure to experiment with different selection styles and feathering values.
