First, type out your text with the Text Tool in a font of your choice. Fat fonts seem to work best with these special effects. I’ve used Arial Black in my sample below, once you finish typing, open the Easy Palette which is located in the menu on the right side of your workspace. This will open the Palette, click on the Galleries Button, and for these samples, open the Material Gallery.

With your text selected, scroll down through the thumbnails to try some of the effects out, here I’ve chosen the gel effect. By double clicking on any of the thumbnails, the preset will apply to the text. Sometimes I want to change the preset, to do this you would left click on the thumbnail and choose Modify Properties and Apply to bring up the material panel.

And pictured below is the Material Panel. As you can see, there are several tabs, each tab has sliders in which to control the color, bevel, border, bump, transparency, shadow, light and shading. I usually adjust the shadow and the border, and occasionally add a bump map to customize the effect I get from the preset.

For the purple glass effect, I used the preset pictured below:

My favorites are the metals. I used the preset below for the rusty test:

The plastic gallery has a great brown colored preset that makes realistic looking chocolate letters:

Doing a sports page? There are some interesting presets in the ball gallery. I reduced the border and depth on this one, and decreased the lights for a little less shininess on this basketball preset:

And of course, be sure and check out the skin gallery

And the Material Gallery is just one of the galleries in the Easy Palette with great text effects, be sure and check out the Material Attribute Gallery and the Type Gallery as well. These effects are simple to apply, so be sure and do lots of experimenting, it takes very little time and you could end up with some great titles for your scrapbook pages!
