Begin by creating a new layout with square dimensions, 300 dpi and a transparent background. The size will depend on how large you want your patchwork flower. (File > New)
Begin by drawing a narrow ellipse with the Ellipse Tool using whatever color you would like the outline of the flower to be. Be sure to create the ellipse as a vector.
Switch to the Pen Tool (keyboard shortcut: V). The nodes of the ellipse should now be visible.
Right-click on the bottom node and select Node Type then click on Convert To Line
You should now have your first flower petal.
Copy the petal (keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+C).
Create a new Vector layer (Layers > New Vector Layer).
Paste the petal onto the new vector layer.
Flip the second petal so that it is upside down (keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+I) and position it directly below the first petal.
Merge the two vector layers together (Layers > Merge > Merge Down).
You should now have one vector layer with both petals on the layer.
Group the two petals together by switching to the Object Selection Tool (keyboard shortcut: O) and then holding the Shift key and clicking on each of the petals. Right-click on the layout and click on Group.
Copy the two petals (Ctrl+C).
Create a new Vector Layer (Layers > New Vector Layer).
Paste as New Vector Selection the two petals onto the new Vector Layer (Ctrl+G).
Rotate the second pair of petals 90 degrees and center it over the first pair of petals (Image > Free Rotate > Right > 90 Degrees > Rotate single layer around canvas center).
Merge this vector layer with the layer that contains the first pair of petals (Layers > Merge > Merge Down).
Group all four petals together by using the Object Selection Tool (O). Click and drag a box around all four petals to select both pairs. Right-click and click Group.
Copy the grouped petals (Ctrl+C).
Create a new Vector Layer (Layers > New Vector Layer).
Paste as Vector Selection the second set of four petals (Ctrl+G).
Rotate the second set of four petals and center it over the first set of four petals (Image > Free Rotate > Right > 45 degrees > Rotate single layer around canvas center).
You should now have the outline of your patchwork flower
Now comes the fun part…let’s begin filling the petals with your favorite papers!
Open as many background papers as you want to use to fill the petals (you can use a different paper for each petal or repeat papers for a patterned look).
Once you have your background papers opened, return to your flower layout.
Using the Magic Wand Tool, click on the empty space of the first petal you want to fill.
Expand the selection (Selections > Modify > Expand > Number of Pixels – 3). Notice how the selection moves into the border of the petal.
Create a new Raster Layer BELOW the layer that contains the flower (Layers > New Raster Layer).
Switch to the Flood Fill Tool (F).
In the Color Palette, click on the Foreground color and choose one of the background papers you should already have opened.
Fill the petal with the paper.
Deselect the first petal (Ctrl+D) and select the next petal.
Repeat these steps to fill the remaining petals.
Merge all Visible Layers (Layers > Merge > Merge Visible) and save the patchwork element as a .PNG file to retain the background transparency
