A patchwork flower is a fun addition to any layout. Here is how to create your own unique patchwork flower accent.
To assist you with this tutorial you can download a single petal template shape and the stitch required HERE.

You need a single petal shape. You can find a template of your own choosing or use the template provided with this tutorial.
Open a new canvas at the size you wish your final flower accent to be. The finished size of my flower will be 4x4 inches.
File> New > Image Size: 4.00 inches x 4.00 inches, 1200x1200 pixels, resolution 300ppi

Browse to find and open the petal template to the files area.

Drag the petal onto your new canvas.
Reduce the size if necessary to a just a bit less than half of your canvas’s height. Use the rulers to help you. Activate the rulers by choosing View> Rulers. You can move the rulers on the canvas by dragging them across the canvas.

Select the petal and choose Edit> Duplicate.

On the pictorial menu bar choose Flip Vertically

Move the flipped, duplicate petal down the canvas so it is opposite the first petal.

Select both petals by holding down CTRL and click the group symbol (blue and yellow puzzle piece) to combine the pieces.

Choose Edit > Duplicate
Rotate the duplicate by clicking and holding the rotate handle and move it to the right.

Choose Edit > Duplicate and rotate to the duplicate to the left.

once you are happy with the positioning of the petals, select and group all of the petals and then choose Format> Center Object on Canvas.

Ungroup the object so each petal is now individually editable. You should have 6 individual petals in the stack at right. Save this template to use again.

The idea is to fill each petal with a different pattern and or color. You can fill your petals with solid colors or a gradient by choosing Effects> Fill with texture or color or you can fill the petals with digital background paper of your own design, from a kit or even a variety of kits, as in this tutorial.
Open the papers you wish to use to the files area by your preferred method.
I am using my own kit “Spring Whisper”.
Select one petal.
Choose Effects> Fill with Texture or Color

Choose Picture

Follow the prompts to fill the petal with your chosen image.

Repeat the same step for each petal – choosing a different paper each time.

To add a center choose Insert > Shape> circle

Resize the circle as required, remove the line and fill with your choice of paper as with the petals.

You can use the flower as is by grouping or flattening all objects and adding it to your layout.
Or you can add stitching around the edges of the petals and center piece for added design interest.
Create a stamp from the cross stitch file included in the download for this tutorial. View this tutorial: Creating a Custom Stamp http://scrapbook-bytes.com/cgi-script/tutorials/publish/article_359.shtml if required.
Select the top petal from your flower, right click and choose copy.

Choose File> New
The canvas is automatically sized to fit the object you have copied. You need to expand the canvas slightly however so increase the canvas size to create a margin around the petal. (As shown below I have changed the canvas size from 0.71 x 1.87 inches to 1 x 2 inches) Select Done.

Right click on the newly created canvas and select Paste

Choose Insert> Shape> Square. Choose Format> Resize Object> Resize Object to fit Canvas.
Remove the line. Choose the paint bucket icon on the pictorial menu bar and select No Fill.
This step is necessary to stop your stitching being flattened with your petal.

With the empty square selected, choose Effects> Paintbrush> Stamps

From the Select a Stamp menu choose the cross stitch

Select a size – 20 works well here.
If you have a graphics tablet and pen (eg. a Wacom tablet) use it for this task as it is easier to control than using a mouse.
Position the cursor at the top of the petal so the crosshair is on the line.

Slowly and carefully drag the cursor along the left hand side edge of the petal ensuring you keep the crosshair on the edge of the petal. Repeat for the right hand edge and bottom edge. (You can also stamp the cross stitch with spacing if preferred)

Select Done when satisfied. A little bit of imperfection add’s character to the stitching!
Right click on just the stitching and choose Copy

Switch to the complete flower canvas, right click and choose Paste.

Select the stitching and position it over the first petal, move the center piece out of the way and zoom in to make it easier.

Duplicate the stitching and position for each petal.

Group each petal with its stitching

Make adjustments in the petal positioning as desired.
To stitch around the center piece follow the directions as above. Place the circle on a new canvas, increase the canvas margins, create the blank shape and drag the stamp around the circle.
Position the stitched center piece on the flower.
Group all the pieces together and you can add your flower to your layout, with a tight dark shadow for added realism.
