TECHNIQUE: Creating Tiled Patterns in Photoshop Elements 2 & 3

This tutorial will show you how to create and define polka dot pattern then use this new pattern to create a background paper in PSE2 &3.

  1. Create a new document at 2 inches by 2 inches and a resolution of 300 pixels/inch
  2. Create a new layer (CTRL+SHIFT+N) and fill it with the color you want to be the background of your pattern.
  3. Create another new layer and using a hard round brush add dots to your tile.
    Hint: To ensure that the dots are even turn on the gridlines (View> Grid) and the snap to grid feature (View> Snap to Grid).
  4. Click Edit> Define Pattern…
  5. In the Pattern Name window, specify a name to identify the pattern with and click Okay.
  6. Now create a new document at the size you want your background paper to be.
  7. Select the entire layer to be filled with your new pattern (CTRL+A).
  8. Make sure that the Marquee tool is active (keyboard shortcut M).
  9. Right click and select Fill Selection… from the pop up menu.
  10. In the Fill Layer menu, set the Contents Use to Pattern and then click the down arrow next to Custom Pattern. The pattern you just defined will be the last pattern on the list. Then click Okay.
  11. You have just created a background paper with your own pattern!
