Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  1. What format type is best to save in?
    a. jpg is optimal for web format especially if you compress before saving... (great for uploading photos to this site *hint hint*

    b. gif file is great for compression on the web, but computer scrapbooking this is highly NOT recommeneded... gif files are limited in color thus will not product the print quality you would like in your images.

    c. tiff and png are awesome for saving final versions of your layout - no compression meaning you don't lose any quality when you save your images.

    d. Ultimately THE BEST format to save in is either psd, or psp format (if using paintshop pro or photoshop). This preserves the images at the original state including any layers you may have created and will allow for altering again later... :)

  2. What do you do with the layouts when you are finished with them?
I personally print them as do many of the others. They can be printed at online photo developers like Ofoto and others. You can also print them on you computer at home (if it has photo quality... *tip*... I personally love my HP 5550 deskjet - print pictures the same as what I was getting from online photo developers... and coupled with the free Kodak imaging software my photos print incredibly).

  3. What software is best to use?
It really is up to you... what makes you comfortable. Paint Shop Pro has a low learning curve while Photoshop has quite a higher learning curve... In the end... whatever program produces the results you like and that allow you to be creative with your layouts and comforable at the same time!

  4. What size "dpi" (dots per inch) is best for print?
Your print format should not be less than 300dpi for optimal printing quality but some have said they've gotten great prints with less; but the "industry" standard in print design is not less than 300dpi.

  5. Where can I get my photos printed online?
Ofoto, PhotoAccess, Shutterfly, Snapfish, Walmart online, any Kodak machine.
